18-30/08 August Activities
August was a productive month for the AMS Roma Sapienza research group, characterized by significant contributions in the realm of space radiobiology and collaboration with prominent institutions in the field.
Virtual Conference Participation: The team made valuable contributions by delivering two talks focused on ontology development for space radiobiology at two virtual conferences both oriented to an AI developers and science community. These presentations highlighted our ongoing efforts to advance the understanding and application of ontology in this specialized field and also put our group in the topic of "AI for scientific discovery" considered one of the emergent and breakthrough tecnology of this years.
Research Topic on Frontiers milestone achieved: with the publication of fourth manuscript in the Research Topics promoted by the group, was achieved a milestone cause the RT will be permanently hosted by the Frontiers editor publisher. This achievement ensures long-term accessibility and impact within the scientific community. Exploring Frontiers: Astroparticle Space Science and Public Health for Future Crewed Space Missions
SFO Bay Area Visit and Collaborations: The visit to the Bay Area provided an excellent opportunity to engage with key collaborators.
The team held discussions with Dr. Dan Berrios at NASA Ames Research Center Biology and Astrobiology division and participated in weekly RBO project meetings led by him. A big thanks to Jack Miller from NASA for creating such a valuable connection for us!
A significant meeting with Kristina Gibbs and Brian Day from NASA SSERVI explored potential future collaborations, with support from Simone Pirrotta of ASI.
Additionally, we had an intense and insightful meeting with Prof. Giorgio Gratta from Stanford's Physics Department, an old friend and colleague. He shared the latest advancements in his research group’s work on neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and other ongoing projects. This enriching exchange took place against the backdrop of the enchanting green Stanford University campus and the clear blue California sky.
Overall, these activities have reinforced our group's standing in the field and opened new avenues for collaboration and research.

20-06 Participation in the RAD2023 conference
We are pleased to share that our research group had the privilege of presenting a talk in the plenary session at theRAD11 conference held in Herceg Novi. The talk, titled "Space Radiobiology with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer detector data: Dose-effects models for carcinogenesis risk prediction"DOI, take part to the session on "cancer research, COVID-19, medical imaging, medicine – case reports, oncology, and radiobiology".
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and acknowledgments to Prof. Goran Ristic for organizing the conference and ensuring its success. The conference provided a valuable platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and networking with esteemed professionals in the field.
During the conference, we had the opportunity to engage in fruitful discussions with Prof. Feng Ru Tang from the National University of Singapore. Prof. Tang expressed a keen interest in our research and its implications. In particular, we discussed the intriguing topic of low-dose radiation brain effects induced by gamma and cosmic rays. Recognizing the potential synergies in our work, we are excited to announce that we will collaborate with Prof. Tang and his team to explore this area further.
15-06 Visit to the Gran Sasso Science Institute
We are delighted to share the details of our recent visit to the Gran Sasso Science Institute(GSSI), where we had the pleasure of meeting with the renowned research group led by Jan Harms and Marica Branchesi. Their team is at the forefront of gravitational waves and multimessenger astronomy, making significant contributions to the field.
During our visit, we had the opportunity to engage in enriching discussions with Jan Harms and his collaborators. One of the exciting topics we explored was the possibility of installing a gravitational wave observatory on the Moon. Jan Harms leads an international collaboration to investigate this intriguing prospect, which could open up new avenues for gravitational wave research and exploration.
In turn, we had the opportunity to introduce our research on space radiobiology at INFN Roma Sapienza to them. They expressed great interest in our work, recognizing the importance of understanding the effects of space radiation on living organisms. We believe that this exchange of knowledge and expertise will foster new insights and collaborative opportunities.
Apart from the scientific exchange, we were deeply impressed by the warm atmosphere and hospitality Jan, Marica, and their colleagues extended to me; last but not least provided a wonderful opportunity to explore the beautiful city of L'Aquila, where the institute is located.
Thanks all for the warm welcome and engaging discussions !!!
