Getting started at the department
Opening a university account and an INFN account
It is much faster to set up an INFN account than a university account. Also, this will give you access to most of the IT of the department, so it is good advice to do this first.
This can be done at the following link: https://calcolo.pd.infn.it/
There will be some back and forth to authorise your account, but it generally doesn't tend to take more than a few hours or a day.
Getting a university account
Go to https://asit.unipd.it/servizi/servizi-utenti-istituzionali/posta-elettronica-dipendenti/gestione-password-unipdit and look for "Primo accesso". Then call the number indicated there to get a temporary password. The Help Desk will guide you through the activation procedure.
Getting internet access
Setting up wifi: The institute has Eduroam and an INFN wifi, but the signal strength of both can be so bad as to render it useless for work. Nevertheless, you should set it up. To do this, it is easiest to go use the configuration tool on https://cat.eduroam.org/ which will setup both Eduroam and the INFN network. It will ask you for your INFN login. This requires registering an INFN account, see the above.
Cabled internet: The better solution is to get access to a cabled ethernet connection. However, you cannot just plug a cable into your laptop and expect it to work: Access to the network is restricted and requires your device to be registered before a successful connection can be made.
- To register your device, you will first have to find the MAC address of each device you want to connect. This is an ID specific to any particular network interface, and each ethernet port, wifi card, usb-to-ethernet adaptor, etc. will have a unique number. Ask someone for help with how
- Once you know the MAC addresses of the device(s) you want to register, you can login at https://calcolo.pd.infn.it/ to register your device. Select Login con account AAI and then Aggiungi dispositivo. To start the registration dialog.
If your laptop does not have an Ethernet port then you can probably get a USB→Ethernet adapter from the department magasino. Ask you boss for help with this.
And yes, you need internet access to get registered to the internet connection.
To get started, it may be useful to borrow an usb-to-ethernet adaptor from someone even if your laptop has an ethernet port. Since the adaptor has its own MAC address, it will work with any laptop.
Printing
Once your device is registered and connected via ethernet you should be able to print naively. In our cases, the laptop automatically discovered all printers at the institute without any further setup. It has been known to be a little unstable and we don't know if works over wifi.
