XEN live migration Howto

Pre-requisite

SL5.2 x86_64 vanilla.

Steps

Live migration allows to move a machine seamlessly from a node to another, without the need to reboot. Of course a shared filesystem has to be available to both dom0 in order to access the domU disk image.

In order to enable live migration on xen domUs you should install the following rpms (updated to the 8th Sep 2008):

SL 5.2 repo:

kernel-xen-2.6.18-92.1.10.el5.x86_64
virt-viewer-0.0.2-2.el5.x86_64
virt-manager-0.5.3-8.el5.x86_64

XEN repo (see later):

xen-libs-3.3.0-2.x86_64
xen-3.3.0-2.x86_64
libvirt-0.4.4-3.x86_64
libvirt-python-0.4.4-3.x86_64
python-virtinst-0.300.2-8.sl.noarch

DAG repo:

qemu-0.9.1-1.el5.rf.x86_64

The XEN repo can be found at this address:
www.gitco.de/repo/xen3.3.0

It is very important that you use these very versions (or maybe following ones), not any below the specified ones. Several testing has already been done with previous versions without any luck.

After this you should edit the file /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp modifying the following lines as described:

(xend-relocation-server yes)
(xend-relocation-port 8002)
(xend-relocation-address ' ')
(xend-relocation-hosts-allow ' ')

After restarting the xend service, you are ready to start your VM and once it's running, you can issue the following command:

xm migrate -l <domU_name> <destination_dom0>
